I think that I am not alone in being in awe of the first artist/teacher who points out the richness that can come from art making. I was lucky to have turned up to where a retired printmaker was giving the basics in drawing. Just up the road from my place. For the next five years, a group of us gathered every week to be guided by this teacher, Graham Coomber, who developed in us the ability to see, to critically think, to engage with each other, to appreciate the art of the masters from history to current practices and who believes that we all have the ability to contribute our own practice to the people around us. If we work hard, the satisfaction follows. This is nothing new, it is just wonderful to have somebody guide you into that realisation, particularly when applying it to art. We all celebrated last night for the very worthy cause of raising money for the Burns Trauma & Critical Care Research Centre of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. It was lovely to meet some of the amazing people from the hospital that truly change lives.
