I took Gwen to the Queensland ballet a couple of years ago to watch the little mermaid. It was stunning. Anyway doing an exercise of doodling marks without thinking about or caring what the subject was, it was not long until I saw the figure of a ballerina floating around the stage within the marks. Biro and methelayted spirits. I have learnt so much from so many people over the past six months, but I am officially back in the classroom doing some more learning/expanding. Experimented with paint application yesterday and fell back on my trusty object or subject that just keeps on giving - the paper wasp nest.
Other shapes come to mind when I look at the painting. Ink markings in my journal I am thinking I will turn into a lino/etching. Still working on them.
A week home and drawing again. I attempted last week but fitting back into this time zone got me a little. Anyway Jude had us drawing still life with perspective in mind. A bit loose but freeing and so good to draw again.
One day workshop at the MFA, Boston with Julie Miller, Drawing from observation to abstraction. Workshop consisted of two sessions beginning with looking at some of American early works of modernism for inspiration. We then went to American folk art wing of the gallery and began making marks across two pages, knowing that after lunch we were filling in the spaces from gallery holding art from Americans with traditional cultural backgrounds. Some of the inspiration from the third floor. I worked from these animals initially thought to be made by Italian born Salvatore Cernigliaro about 1880 for the Gustav A. Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia. My work, graphite and coloured pencil on pastel paper.
